BRINGING THE H.U.R.T TO NYS SKIING

Chris Yarsevich

Age: 30

Hometown: Saratoga Springs, NY

Athletic interests:
Nordic Ski racing and backcountry skiing, road and mountain biking, hiking, and running.

Rockwood Forest Johnstown, NY

Racing Experience:
I have been racing since 1994, with a few years of non-racing during college.

Tim

Tim Huneck

Age: 50

Hometown: Rexford, NY

Athletic Interests:

Nordic skiing tops the list. I’m also an avid hiker. I celebrated turning half a century by climbing 50 peaks in my 50th year (all 46 high peaks, 3 White Mountains, and Slide in the Catskills). I’m a life-long cyclist. I’ve done several cross-country bike tours, including my honeymoon (Albany to Missoula, Montana.) I roller ski quite a bit and am a faithful member of the UUSRS circuit. I’ve dabbled in cyclocross and am occasionally seen running.

Favorite Place to Ski:

I love classic races at Saratoga Biathlon and skate races at courses with short, punchy climbs, like the biathlon side of Mt. Van Ho and, believe it or not, Crandall Park. Really, though, I just love to ski and will ski anywhere there’s snow. I enjoy finding hidden patches of snow and skiing when it shouldn’t be possible. I’ve logged well over a hundred ski days each of the past two years.

Racing Experience:

My first Nordic race was in 1979 when a group of us Yellowstone Park concession employees challenged the park rangers to a race. We kicked their asses. Buoyed by this success, a friend and I went to West Yellowstone to race against the U.S. team. At least I beat my friend; so I wasn’t DFL. After that, my racing career went dormant until the late 90s when I joined the NYSSRA circuit.

I’ve also had a long bike racing career beginning in the mid 70s. I was a junior the same time as Greg Lemond; so I’ve been trounced by the best in both sports.

Since those early thumpings, I’ve managed some decent age group placings, including NYSSRA points champion the past three years and several ESG medals.

Austin

Austin Huneck

Age: 14

Hometown: Rexford, NY

Athletic Interests:

I’m a lifelong Nordic skier, skiing on my own since age 3 and riding around in a backpack with my dad and mom before that. I love to hike and will go on any crazy adventure my dad and his friends think up. I became an Adirondack 46er this year. I hiked rim to rim at the Grand Canyon. I did the Great Range (24 miles, 8 peaks) in one day. I’m an avid tree climber and have pioneered climbing 24 trees over 24 feet in our yard. I’ve recently taken up running, mostly to train for Nordic. I also enjoy cycling. I rode 5 miles each way to school most days last spring.

Favorite Place to Ski:

I love hills, so I like Garnet Hill, Old Forge and Osceola. Lake George is my favorite high school course.

Racing Experience:

I’ve been on the Bill Koch circuit since my lollipop days, winning races at all age levels. Two years ago I moved up to the NYSSRA circuit and was J3 point champion. Last year I was top J3 in most races I entered and I entered them all. This made me overall NYSSRA point champion. I was number one skier on my high school team as an eighth grader and finished just outside the top 10 in several Section 2 races. This year I joined the cross country running team and I’m moving up in the freshman results each race.

Aaron

Aaron Huneck

Age: 11

Hometown: Rexford, NY

Athletic Interests:

I’m the most well-rounded member of the family. I ski, hike, run and ride my bike like the rest of them. But I also play soccer and all kinds of sports with the much bigger neighborhood kids. Like my older siblings, I’ve been skiing since I was an embryo. I’ve hiked 22 of the high peaks and am eager to do more as I grow into the longer distances. I expect to become a 46er at a younger age than my brother.

Favorite Place to Ski:

I like Lapland Lake and Mt. Van Hoevenberg, but I’ll ski anywhere there’s snow – the backyard, the woods behind our house. I’ve even skied on a frozen puddle.

Racing Experience:

I’ve been a Bill Kocher from the beginning, winning races and candy at all levels. This will be my second, and final, year as a J4 and I’m looking to opening up a can of whoop-butt. (I’m not old enough to use the other word.) I’m itching to compete at the ESG, but they changed the rules and I have to wait a year. I’m looking at moving up to the NYSSRA circuit this year and going after the J4 point title to begin my NYSSRA wardrobe.

I’ve been playing soccer since the zero league (age 4). I once scored 8 goals in a game. I’ve played on select travel teams for the past four years. This year I’m on the U12 A Team. I pity the fool that messes with the A Team.

Emma

Emma Huneck

Age: 17

Hometown: Rexford, NY

Athletic Interests:

Skiing, mostly, since that is all my family ever does. Also hiking, although I pretend not to like it. I also pretend to run (sometimes).

Favorite Place to Ski:

I love fast courses, especially Crandall and the lake side of Lapland, particularly for skating.
Even though I love skating, classic races at Lapland are my favorite, granted we get the kick wax right (which we usually don’t). Thanks to my father, we had some (key word) successful wax days this year which wouldn’t have happened without him.

Racing Experience:

I don’t think that my family discovered the ski racing scene until my early middle school days, but, believe me, once we knew about Bill Koch I was always there. I think that my first BK race was a skating race at Mt. Van Hoevenberg and my first festival was in Lake George.
Past that, I recruited the majority of my friends to do the ski team at Shen with me freshman year. There were so many of us that we made up almost half of the team (and were disliked by several of the upperclassmen because of that). Most of them stuck with it (despite a few complications) and we are about to go into our fourth and final year on the team.
I’ve also competed in the Empire Games for the past three years.

Ed Luban

Age: 57

Hometown: Syracuse, NY

Athletic Interests: Cycling, including cyclocross, running, and, oh yeah, skiing. Long-time speedskater, but now retired.

Favorite Place to Ski: Gatineau Park, Mt. Van Ho, Osceola

Racing Experience: First race was in 1977 on a pair of rented skis at Ft. Devens, MA. Did the Stowe Derby 7 or 8 yrs. later, then got into skiing for real when I moved to Syracuse in 1988. I’ve done the Winona Forest races, including the Tourathon, pretty regularly since the 1990’s and have been more active on the NYSSRA circuit and in the ESG in recent years. I’ve done several Keskinadas and finished 4th overall in the LP Loppet 50k classic in 2009. Won the NYSSRA M6 season points series in 2008 and 2009. The Lord of Destruction enters M6 this year. I am more than ready to put the HURT on this Peruvian.

Adam

Name: Adam Luban

Age: 14

Hometown: Syracuse, NY

Athletic Interests: I’m a lifelong skier and cyclist, dating back to two years of age. Like my teammate Austin Huneck, I was being pulled around on skis and wheels. Since then, I’ve also become a track and cross-country runner. When I’m not running or skiing, I race cyclocross or ride my MTB. Outside of that, I’m occasionally seen playing ultimate Frisbee, capture the flag, or snow foot ball at Nottingham High.

Favorite Place to Ski: For a day of skiing, there is no place like Mt. Van Ho. During the crusty days of March, however, Osceola is my favorite. For a quick night ski, I love Sunnycrest Park in Syracuse.

Racing Experience: Along with HURT teammate Austin Huneck, I won the junior relay at the 2008 NYSSRA championships. I’ve won several cyclocross, cross-country, track races. In the 2009 Lake Placid Loppet 25k I was third in my age group.
